Red Roofed Church
The Red Roofed Church in Mauritius is probably the most famous church on the island. A catholic church, the official name is the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel, but it is known by tourists as the Red Roofed or Red Roof Church.
Located in Cap Malheureux the church is easy to get to, not being very far from Grand Baie on the coastal road. The church was built in 1938 and it is the most northerly point off the island, where the British first landed before laying claim to the island in 1810. The name means Cape of Bad Luck and was given by the French after being surprised by the British.
Entrance is free, providing there is not a service on and the church is open every day. You should make sure you dress appropriately. The church is a popular spot for newlyweds to have their pictures taken and for picnickers. It is said that it is the most photographed church in Mauritius.
Kknown for its distinctive red roof, which attracts many passers-by and offers a picturesque background for your photos. You can even see the island reserve of Coin de Mire.
