Alexandra Falls Mauritius
The Alexandra Falls Mauritius are found approx. 700 metres above sea level. They can be found in the Black River Gorges National Park. To get to the falls go to Plaine Champagne and head towards Grand Bassin and the Shiva statue. Look out for the signpost of the Alexandra Falls Viewpoint, and once you arrive, you will find a large car park area and vendors selling refreshments and a range of other goods. There is no charge to visit the falls. The falls themselves are pretty rather than spectacular, but it does depend on the water levels at the time.
A double waterfall with a long drop that is popular with tourists. You have views from different areas and from a raised platform where you can see quite far. There are good views of the gorge from the main view point and the cloud forest of Mt Cocotte. There is a moderately difficult path that leads to the top of the waterfall with some outstanding view and it is well worth the effort to visit. The path is fairly well trodden and marked up. but there are a few steep slopes to climb down and a few streams to cross over. the walk takes around 30 min and you are better of with trainers, rather than beach shoes or flip-flops as it can be a bit slippery. It is the scenic view and the natural forest, with the papyrus trees, that makes a visit to the falls worthwhile.
After your visit, relax at the picnic areas under the trees with the sound of the waterfalls in the background. There are plenty of spaces with tables and chairs fixed for you to use. Watch out for the many monkeys around though.
