Cafe des Arts Mauritius
Cafe des Arts Mauritius is an intriguing dining option, a gourmet restaurant inside an old mill, that has been transformed into a charming art gallery. It is in Trou d’Eau Douce, on the central east coast, in the middle of a field, off the beaten track and offers a great atmosphere in which to eat your lunch or dinner. It is unquestionably unique. The mill has been refurbished to house the artworks of Yvette Maniglier.
There is a bar for a drink before dinner. The food is a modern nod to traditional Mauritian cuisine, cooked to a very high standard. The food has been described as worthy of a Michelin star. The staff and owner are very friendly and can not do enough for you. It is clear they have a passion for art.
Original artwork surrounds you as you enjoy your wonderful food. Haphazard arty decor covering the walls, in this unusual and wonderful place. The art is owned by the Maniglier foundation and not for sale. Yvette Maniglier was a French artist, born 1929, died 2007.
Cafe des Arts Mauritius houses the Foundation, its Gastronomic restaurant Le Café des Arts, its contemporary Art Gallery and Museum, the Maniglier Workshop. There is a private swimming pool designed in the ruins.
Maniglier is member of French Academy and also the last pupil of Matisse. The collection includes paintings featuring different themes, abstract architecture, music, de-structured art and nudes. The gallery can only be visited whilst dining at the restaurant.
